This North American premiere is performed for the first time in English. Don’t miss it!!! Canadian actors are showing their talents in a European play using three different theatrical styles.

The three acts have widely differing historical, cultural and geographical settings and a varying cast of characters when produced as a unified work. Only the “savior” in all acts is being performed by the same actor.

Act I: Seville, 1493. At the height of the inquisition, a Jewish girl renounces her background and religion to marry the Christian grandee (Saviour) whom she loves. He, Alonso, is thus “rescuing” her from Jewry, and also saving her father’s life by smuggling him out of Spain.

Act II: Holland, 1793. A saddler and his wife have to accommodate two French soldiers (Saviours) of the “liberating” Napoleon Bonaparte army, bringing their notion of liberty, equality and fraternity into an area where these are neither welcomed nor understood. It is a mix of brilliant and sophisticated humour with tragic consequences.

Act III: Poland, 1953, time of “Stalinism”. The hallucinations of a state-security interrogator (Saviour), involving a visit from his mentor who operated in the days when “ideals” meant something and there were still “real” enemies to be sought out.

On the very corner of that old map
There is the place I miss so much.
It is the Land of apples, hills,
tart wine and love.

A Stage Performance supported by multimedia (famous Polish painters and archive films) inspired by poetry and songs written by Jacek Kaczmarski.

…although I shot past you like a shadow…

Five years after Jacek Kaczmarski’s passing, I am listening to his Epitaph for Vladimir Vysotski as though it were the epitaph he wrote for himself. Kaczmarski did not spare his vocal cords or his heart. All in order to bear witness to his time and to the truth which is never easy, irrespective of the time in which we are destined to search for it. Kaczmarski was not only a singer, he was a poet as well, one that knew how to describe our common fate in a precise and erudite way, to describe our fate as both human beings and Poles. In fact, he was more than a poet, he was a National Bard in times of Poland’s enslavement, and also when our country lay bare her indigence and sins after regaining sovereignty. There was not a false note to Kaczmarski’s patriotism, even though he emigrated twice, both times exposing himself to criticism. The first time he left under Solidarity, only to be with us on the waves of Radio Free Europe. The second time he went seemingly for good, to collect mussels on Australian beaches instead of assisting us in the process of building a free Poland. Eventually, though, he returned for eternity, shoulder to shoulder with Thanatos, a comeback worthy of a picture by the great symbolist painter Jacek Malczewski. In the late seventies, he came to the Krakow Festival of Student Songs. These were very popular events at the time, even if hardly advertised in the public media under communism. And it was his song The Walls that won the first prize, becoming the milestone in his varied and extraordinary career. It paved a totally new path in the Polish literary and stage canon. He engaged his entire self in his singing, passionate, profound, and uncompromising. He filled in a shameful gap in the Polish tradition, probing our past, contemplating art, looking under the mantle of historic events in order to expose both the beauty and the sins of the Polish soul. It wasn’t an easy proposition; most artists choose to wear bright commercial costumes instead, turning their backs on their mother country, tired of looking on festering wounds. In my emigrant wandering, I lost my Jacek Kaczmarski recordings, listened to so many times. There were a great many of them, his repertoire unending, with hundreds of songs to his name, most of them genuine jewels. And his disturbing comments on our national identity, on inner honesty and the sense of being will stay with us forever, helping us to endure, to discern rays of light in the dark.

TORONTO – Atlas Terminal – An International Arts Presentation hosted by Atlas Stage Productions Canada along with Artistic Director Miro Polatynski will be presenting the Canadian premiere of ‘Alibi’ by Lukasz Wylezalek from The Adam Mickiewicz Theatre (Czestochowa – Poland) in the Studio Theatre of the Toronto Centre for the Arts on Friday May 15 at 8pm and Saturday May 16, 2009 at 6pm & 8pm.
This witty criminal story takes place in the Polish Mountains, at the Czech Republic/Germany border. It unmasks the life of provincial people, their needs, emotions and desires. It grips you, draws you close and gets you to empathize with a set of ordinary but clearly defined characters.

Alibi’s sophisticated humour uncovers a Europe vastly different from what you’re read in history books or heard from your Grandfather’s stories. Writer/Director Lukasz Wylezalek’s plays are powerfully authentic and often dominated by the harshness of reality. Wylezalek is the director of the acclaimed Polish film Balanga (The Bash) and is the author of the films Darmozjad Polski (The Polish Freeloader) and O dwoch takich co nic nie ukradli.

The play features the acting talents of Paula Kwietniewska, Adam Hutyra and Michal Kula.

Designed by: Mariusz Pala
Lighting Designer: Zbigniew Checinski
Music: Janusz Yanina Iwanski
Sound Designer: Zdzislaw Kubziankowski
Assistant Director: Mariuz Korek

Atlas Stage Productions is a theatre company that showcases Canadian diversity to an international audience by staging productions of new Canadian works. Their inaugural production at the Toronto Centre for the Arts was Theatre of the Film Noir in March 2009.

‘Alibi’ will be performed in Polish and translated into English simultaneously.

Paris. 1944. The war is over, but nothing is certain; loyalties shift; questions of life, sex, guilt, and death hang on the nationality of a bar of chocolate or a pack of cigarettes. In the murky atmosphere a murder has been committed, and five desperate people try to solve the mystery in this hardedge, breathless black comedy…

Theatre of the Film Noir, directed by Mirek Polatynski, is set in Paris shortly after its liberation from German occupation forces during the Second World War. Director explores the crushing panic of people placed on the brink of hell’s end and an uncertain future of peace. George F. Walker’s unique Canadian perspective seeks neither heroes nor villains. Neither does he judge the aggressors nor raise monuments to heroism. He simply shows the bare structure of a human being driven by fear and a need to survive – unfettered by values generally considered humanitarian. This constitutes the timeliness and universality of the play, which encompasses all wars and its victims, including current conflicts. World War II serves as a pretext to examine the heart of the matter. The director does not dwell on its tragedy as such – for we are all well aware of the obvious – but rather focuses on how easily human nature loses itself under the strain of extreme influences, when fear becomes the determining factor driving survival.
